Catch some fresh air
at one of the Frisian Islands
A trip to the beautiful Frysian Islands is definitely worth it. During the crossing by boat to Vlieland and Terschelling you can spot some seals laying at their own “private beach”. It is quite common to spot more than hundred of these unique animals during the trip.
The Wadden Islands
Making a day trip to the beautiful Wadden Islands ('Waddeneilanden') is highly recommended. During the passage between Vlieland and Terschelling you will even pass by private beaches, inhabited by seals from this particular part of the Wadden Sea. Often there are over a hundred of these unique species each stretched out in the heat of the sun. For more information about the islands, please visit www.wadden.nl
"Wadlopen", Mudflat Hiking
Visiting Friesland would hardly be complete without a walk on the "wadden" (the low-tide sea beds). A trip to Simonzand, roaming past Robbengat or to Ameland or Schiermonnikoog (and back). Depending on your wishes and condition you are free to decide what suits your own needs. Every trip includes unique sights and beautiful surroundings. Seal centre Lenie 't Hart in Pieterburen
Since the establishment of the Seal centre in 1971, Lenie 't Hart captures and cares for sick and wounded seals in Pieterburen. The centre has since developed from a simple rehabilitation centre for young seals, to a research-oriented seal hospital equipped with high-tech facilities. Facilities include quarantines, laboratories, a pharmacy and all necessary research tools. All captured seals are cared for with the goal of releasing them back into the wild upon recovery. Not one of the seals is kept in captivity. (Seals are certainly not captured for breeding purposes).
